One of the things I really miss about our Lutheran church in Japan is the liturgy. I find that my mind wanders so much in the course of a service that having the same thing repeated each week meant that I got much more out of it than the most carefully-formulated unique-to-the-week liturgy in our current church (or any other, really). And in times when I just can’t listen to 90% of the sermon – like when I had a five-month-old with me, or when the combination of August hotstuffyness and the precise tilt of the pews has me struggling against lightheadedness and imagining what will happen if I pass out in the middle of the service – a consistent liturgy still allowed me to leave feeling that I had received something and made some kind of contact with God in a way that I can’t on my own.
