The following is from The Pricke of Conscience, attrib. Richard Rolle de Hampole, ed. Richard Morris (Berlin, 1863), lines 6508-24:
[Lazarus] saw and herd þare many a payne,
Þat tyme namely when he was ded,
For his saul þan was at þat sted,
Four dayes, als God vouched save,
And swa lang his body lay here in grave;
And at þe last God raysed hym ryght
Fra ded til lyf thurgh his myght;
Bot þat þat he saw he noght forgatt,
And sone þare-after als he satt
With Crist at þe meete in Martha hows,
He talde a party of þa paynes hydus;
Bot yhit durst he noght al telle,
For drede of Crist, þat he saw in helle,
Yhit lyfed he after fyften yhere,
Bot he lughe never, ne made blythe chere,
For drede of dede þat he most efte dreghe,
And of þe paynes þat he saw with eghe.
